I. What is Grid-Side Energy Storage?

Grid-side energy storage: Generally refers to large-scale energy storage carriers connected to the transmission, transformation, and distribution assets of the power grid to serve the grid operation. By providing various auxiliary services such as peak shaving, frequency regulation, backup, black start, and demand response support for grid operation, it can promote the consumption of new energy sources and improve the safety, stability, flexibility, and economy of grid operation.

 

II. Four Major Functions of Grid-Side Energy Storage

1. Balancing Supply and Demand: Electricity production and consumption need to be balanced in real time, but electricity demand fluctuates at different times. For example, electricity consumption is high during the day and low at night. Energy storage systems can store electricity when supply exceeds demand and release it when peak demand occurs, achieving supply and demand balance and reducing grid load pressure.

2. Promoting Renewable Energy Consumption: Renewable energy sources such as solar power and wind power are intermittent and unstable, and energy generation is entirely dependent on weather.

3. Enhancing Grid Flexibility: Grid-side energy storage can rapidly respond to changes in grid power demand, completing charging and discharging within milliseconds to minutes, addressing sudden grid failures, emergencies, and power demands. This improves the grid's regulation capabilities and flexibility in responding to sudden increases in new energy demand.

4. Delaying Grid Upgrades and Upgrades: By reducing peak load, grid-side energy storage can decrease the maximum grid load, delaying upgrades and upgrades to the transmission and generation grid, reducing transmission costs and large investments. This is an effective way to solve major problems with minimal cost.
